In Character is developed between PUBLICS, Index Foundation (Stockholm) and PRAKSIS (Oslo): three small-scale organisations dedicated to collaborating with young people to curate new models, formats and modalities for future publics.
For PUBLICS this collaboration has an opportunity to introduce a new model to re-structure the organisation: PUBLICS YOUTH Advisory Board offers paid positions for young people who actively support our programming. This model bringing together a group of young people with differing cultural backgrounds, languages and life experiences. Index Teen Advisory Board (ITAB) has been initiated and developed by Index since 2015 and has been since adapted by PRAKSIS when they established PTAB in 2019. Since 2019 we have been thinking how three institutions working with art from complementary positions can share approaches to working with young people, democratic processes and new publics.
In Character looks at the characters encountered in the art world; from artists and organisers, to those who make up the gallery and museum audience. The groups consider areas including behaviour, acceptability, and ideas of comfort and discomfort. They engage with institutions and arts professionals to work through subjects of representation, language, power structures, and inclusion in the art world. Initial workshops and research will result in outputs including; a blog, conferences, a game manual, and radio broadcasts.
In Character: Publication & Podcast, launched in 2022, are made by the Teen Advisory Boards of PRAKSIS and Index, together with team members from PRAKSIS, Index and PUBLICS, designers Johannes Jellum and Tonje Lona Eriksen. They have been shaped through encounters with many people including: Sol Archer, Fredda Berg, Tormod Carlsen, João Doria, Mia Habib, Ina Hagen, Hanni Kamaly, Kirsty Kross, Kevin Leander Fiabema, Rudy Loewe, MYCKET, Temi Odumosu, Marit Silsand, Klara Utke Acs, and Gelawesh Waledkhani. The publication is published by Byverkstedet Press.
The publication and podcast invite you to make arts spaces your own, one small action at a time. They share both ‘games’ based on workshops the boars were part of, and topics that they feel are important to discuss right now. This book and podcast are for the art-curious, for people teaching art, for arts spaces that are open to challenging their ways of working, and anyone interested in new experiences and ideas.
In Character is made possible by support from; Erasmus+: Youth in Action programme of the European Union.
