Please join us for Publics Special Summer Party on June 29th at Tanner. The evening consists of DJ-sets by NY-based Douglas Sherman & Takaya Nagase, and a film screening and conversation about the legendary Loft gatherings with artist Martin Beck.
Beck’s project Last Night is based on the 118 songs played by New York musical host David Mancuso on June 2 1984 at one of the last Loft party. The film shows each record played that night in sequence, from beginning to end, on a vintage turntable in a domestic atmosphere. The complete progression of songs lasts approximately thirteen hours, offering an intimate sonic journey that mirrors a particular night at a particular moment in time.
Since 1970 Mancuso regularly hosted dance parties at his home what came to be known as the “Loft parties” – unique in their combination of communal atmosphere and high-quality sound, centered around music and dancing. The Loft became a blueprint after which many celebrated disco-era New York clubs tried to model themselves. The Loft parties, however, retained their intimacy through being invitation-only with no commercial agenda.
Douglas Sherman takes what you could call a holistic approach to parties. A longtime member of the Loft and Joy families, he carefully considers the entire experience of an event, from audio quality to decor. His bag is always loaded with incredible records as he avoids playing from a set playlist in favor of constructing an aural tapestry that is emotional and transformative while always watching for the heart of the dancer.
Takaya Nagase is a NY-based Japanese DJ, producer and A&R for Soundmen On Wax Records. Known as an ambassador for New York’s legendary JOY parties, Takaya Nagase’s musical style does not neatly fit into one genre. Instead, he expresses aspects of house, disco, soul, funk, jazz, reggae, dub, techno, ambient, electronica, rock, African, and Latin music. His style is free, flexible, and original, allowing Takaya to create a singular musical experience.
