Publics is delighted to announce a third reading group session this Spring ­­– Voice in Philosophy ­– which takes place on Wednesday, 25th of May, 4.30-6pm. Through Voice In Philosophy, philosopher Alice Lagaay unravels possible approaches to the voice as a medium and a material, noting ‘an increased attentiveness to the embodied and acoustic nature of human utterance and communication’ across multiple fields. Drawing upon the contrast between linguistic meaning and abstract sound, the essay centres around the textuality of spoken words and the voice as an embodied experience. The text travels through performative, philosophical and linguistic approaches to both individual and collective voices.

Alice Lagaay is a Berlin-based philosopher, actively involved in the emerging interdisciplinary field of Performance Philosophy. Her current research focuses on the notion of “creative indifference” (as conceived by expressionist philosopher Salomo Friedlaender in 1918), in the context of a wider investigation into practices of “negative performance” (letting be/leaving being, not-doing, silence, failure, the impossible).

Jo Hislop is an artist and producer working across photography, film and writing. Her work explores the nuances and intricacies of sensorial and bodily experience. Originally from the North of England, she is currently based in Helsinki, where she is completing a Masters in Photography at Aalto University.
