Join us for The Observer Effect, the final event of PUBLICS Youth 2024, on 8th March 2025, an evening to discuss the role and politics of the moving image in documenting and understanding our present. We will premiere the members’ short films, produced in collaboration with artist Shubhangi Sing, and The Future Futures Talk Show.
ACTIVITIES
This year, our youth board have been exploring the politics of the moving image, considering video and film as forms of communication and recording of the present. The have been working with artist Shubhangi Sing and met researcher Léo Custódio.
On December 12th 2024, the board hosted a film night, curated in collaboration with Noncitizen collective. The screening took place at Nordic Culture Point and presents a selection of short films exploring home, migration and the land by young filmmakers based in Finland and Sweden.
The board has also been part of PUBLICS’ newly launched Centre for Curatorial Thinking, meeting international artists and curators and gaining an insight in curatorial work and theory.
In November, we traveled to Stockholm to meet our partners Index Teen Advisory Board and PRAKSIS Teen Advisory Board. On November 2nd we produced The Future Futures Talk Show – Nordic Youth Symposium 2024, an afternoon of conversations between young creatives, artists and filmmakers, discussing how film can redirect our gazes and help us read the present.
The Future Futures Talk Show 2024
The three episodes of The Future Futures Talk Show bring together young creatives, artists and filmmakers to discuss how film can redirect our gazes. The talk show is hosted by the members of PUBLICS Youth Advisory Board (Helsinki), Index Teen Advisory Board (Stockholm) and PRAKSIS Teen Advisory Board (Oslo). It was recorded live at Konstfack Stockholm in November 2024.

BIOS
Akanksha Bhat (she/her) is a 19-year-old Design student at Aalto University, with a flair for art and a passion for Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance style. Lately, her interests have been transitioning into a fusion of traditional and contemporary art forms. Alongside her evolving interests, Akanksha is passionate about sustainability and making education accessible to everyone and envisions a future where the two harmoniously blend in with her work.
Isabella Oropeza (she/her) is a Venezuelan-American second-year Computer Science student at the University of Helsinki. She enjoys drawing, watercolour painting, and listening to music while exploring different meanings in media.
Joanna Lagerblom (she/her) is a 20-year-old politics student born and based in Helsinki. She’s passionate about philosophy, accessibility of information, and the interplay of politics, contemporary art and emotions. She seeks to approach art with curiosity and analytical thinking and is drawn to topics like reconciliation, anticapitalism and resistance.
Arnav Ghurde (he/him) is a 19-year-old Design BA student at Aalto University. He is from India and loves working with narrative visual mediums like animation, photography, and sculpture. He strongly believes in the involvement of art and culture in everyday life and sees it as a method of connection with our surroundings as well as self-discovery.
Kaius Kuhmonen (they/them) is interested in art education and in using art as a means of understanding people and the world. I usually gravitate towards drawing, painting and more recently video art.
Linh Dan Vu (she/her) is an international student, originally from Vietnam. She study Sustainable Urban Development and cares about the roles of arts in the urban landscape. Dan has a background in musical theatre and graphic design, as she thinks it is wonderful to convey ideas and opinions through visual storytelling. Her desire is to make arts inclusive, accessible, and diverse.
Matilda Järvi (she/her) is originally from Finland and has recently moved back to her home country after spending 7 years in Poland. She is fuelled by partaking in cultural experiences like art exhibitions and the opera. Currently, she is self-employed and spends her free time painting portraits.
Helena Massuda Garcia (they/them) is a 21-year-old Brazilian Design student in Aalto University with a love for animation, art, storytelling, and all things whimsy.
Yelyzaveta (Liza) Babaieva (she/her) is a 20-year-old Ukrainian, currently living in Finland. She is a student of KSADA, studying Advertisement and Video art. Combining her academy studies with a part-time job and volunteering, she organises art workshops for children. There’s a lot of things she is passionate about, such as photography, drawing and reading books. Liza’s main interest now is videography and film, and how the creation and consumption of this kind of art affects our lives. In her own work she likes to mix different types of media, combining traditional art with digital, physical aspect with technical.
Yu Yue (he/him) is a student based in Helsinki. Yue has a background in photography. His current interest is art publishing as a form of communication between sciences and arts. He is also a cyclist and interested in cycling as an athletic discipline and a transformative mean of transport.
