PUBLICS Youth podcast
In episode 1. PUBLICS Youth 2022 In Conversation, Anastasiia Lapteva, Manda Loipponen, Valeriia Masliukova-Malova, Erika Ryppieva, Róza Turunen, and Vanessa Uhlbäck recollect some of the conversations and activities that they have experienced as being part of the Board. In their words, playfulness and togetherness emerge as strategies to navigate the moment of passage from teenagehood to adulthood, and to reclaim self-definition in the shift from education to professionalization. The Boards also reflect on the status of the Youth as a collective within the organization of PUBLICS; and on the experience of engaging with art while being in dialogue with others.

In episode 2. Harold Offeh on working with PUBLICS Youth, artist and educator Harold Offeh and project coordinator Micol Curatolo reconsider their experience of working with PUBLICS Youth, putting into perspective the role that projects like Youth Advisory Board play in both the personal trajectory of one’s growth, and the infrastructures of contemporary art education and professionalization. Harold Offeh worked with the Youth on the political and cultural meaning of voice and play, and how those are made public. Together they have explored how voices appear in popular visual culture, questioning the relation between digital performativity and the politics of voice.

As part of PUBLICS co-commissioning with Latitudes Barcelona, PY participated in a series of performative rehearsals with performance artist Laia Estruch and curator Irina Mutt, drawing on Estruch’s latest work Ocells perduts (Stray Birds).
In January PUBLICS Youth was introduced to ITAB and PTAB during the launch of the In Character Publication.
In October PUBLICS Youth, ITAB and PTAB gathered in Helsinki to present their work-in-progress at Today Is Our Tomorrow. Some words about our 2022 Youth Board members:
Anastasiia Lapteva is a young multimedia artist based in Helsinki, currently studying Fine Arts in the University of the Arts Helsinki. She is interested in themes such as the perception of truth and reality, interactions between art and the audience and identity in times of new technologies.
Erika Ryppieva “Like all good fruit, the balance of life is in the ripe and ruin.” (Alt-J)
Manda Loipponen enjoys cinematography, photography, colouring and music.
Róza Turunen is a Finnish-Czech artist and activist living and working in Helsinki. They are interested in beauty, kitsch, euphoric and ecstatic feelings. In their work, they seek to express and deal with personal experiences of reality such as human reliance on spirituality and explores this through the boundaries between corporeality and spirituality. Materially, Roza uses plastic in their sculptures, as they feel its futility crystallises something essential about human nature and ideology. Currently they study at Art School MAA.
Valeriia Masliukova-Malova has participated in the art field for many years and her work has been featured in art competitions in both Finland and St. Petersburg, Russia. Currently she is graduating from college with a specialism in media and visual expression. Her interests lie in the mediums of graphics, sculpture and installation.
Vanessa Uhlbäck has a multidisciplinary background covering history, art history and theology. Her education has had a large impact on how she perceives the effects of art and how it can be used as a tool to express new ways of viewing society. She is fascinated how art can work as a medium for expressing the messages of both artists and curators.
