Drawing on Jaukkuri’s extensive experience and expertise she will be talking about her curatorial practice with Dr Tominga O’Donnell between 5-8.00pm on May 15th, refreshments will be served afterwards.
Maaretta Jaukkuri is a curator, writer, and educator based in Helsinki, Finland. From 1970-83, Jaukkuri worked as exhibitions and information secretary at the Artists’ Association of Finland and later as head of exhibitions at The Nordic Arts Centre, Suomenlinna/ Sveaborg, Helsinki. Formerly Chief Curator at the Finnish contemporary art museum KIASMA, and artistic director at the Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo, she has curated a number of major Finnish, Scandinavian, and international exhibition projects in various countries. Her projects Artscape Nordland, ARS 95, and ARS 01 shifted the paradigm of art’s relation to society and nature attempting to claim common space for different spheres of knowledge. She graduated in English philology, art history, and literature from the University of Helsinki and has written about contemporary art and published a book “Muutosten pyörteissä” / “Konst I förvandling” (SKS) about the 1980’s in Finnish art. A residency program run by the Maaretta Jaukkuri Foundation was initiated in 2018 Kvalnes, Lofoten Islands.
Dr Tominga O’Donnell is Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at MUNCH, where they curated the programme Munchmuseet on the Move (2016–2019), adopting a queer curatorial approach and commissioning a range of off-site art projects. At the new museum on Oslo’s waterfront, O’Donnell is the curator of solo exhibitions with Camille Henrot, Sandra Mujinga, Piya Wanthiang, Admir Batlak and Constance Tenvik (2024); the inaugural MUNCH Triennale – the machine is us together with Stefano Collicelli Cagol; and a series of performance commissions in collaboration with Ingrid Moe, which include new works by Bendik Giske, Manuel Pelmuş, Camille Norment, and Brendan Fernandes.
